The shape of the workload

A two-year distance MBA runs in semesters, each with a handful of papers, and each paper asks for the same three things: reading or recorded lectures, written assignments, and a term-end examination. The load is not level across a term. It is light in the opening weeks, swells around assignment deadlines, and peaks in the run-up to examinations. A weekly plan that only works in the light weeks is not a plan.

So build the week around two facts of working life: your evenings are short and unreliable, and your weekend is the only place a long, unbroken block can live.

A week that survives contact with a job

DayBlockWhat it is for
MondayOne evening blockA lecture or a chapter — the week’s new material
TuesdayCommute or lunchListening or flashcard review; nothing that needs a desk
WednesdayOne evening blockThe second half of the new material; note what confused you
ThursdayTwenty minutesSkim the week’s notes and write down the open questions
FridayNothingDeliberately empty — this is the buffer, not laziness
SaturdayThe long blockAssignments and problem work — whatever needs an unbroken run
SundayShort blockClose the week: quick review, then plan the next one

The principles underneath it matter more than the grid. Keep the same slots every week — a slot you renegotiate weekly is a slot you will lose. Size blocks to what you can actually protect, not to ambition; a real hour beats a theoretical three. Let the weekend carry the heavy work, because depth needs continuity. And leave one evening empty on purpose, so that a meeting that runs late on Tuesday costs you a buffer rather than the plan.

The semester layer

On the first day of each term, put three sets of dates into your calendar before you study anything: assignment due dates, the examination timetable as soon as it publishes, and any project submission windows. Then plan backwards from them.

The early weeks belong to reading, while the load is light and the material is new. The middle of the term belongs to assignments — they are the marks you control, and they reward being finished early far more than being polished at midnight before the deadline. The final stretch belongs to revision and past questions, with the material already familiar rather than being met for the first time.

Use annual leave for the examination days themselves, not for last-night cramming. A rested sitting on the day is worth more than a frantic evening before it — and if your exams are online and proctored, the calm matters twice.

The light weeks at the start of a term are not free time; they are the cheapest study hours you will ever get. An hour of reading in week two saves a far more expensive hour in exam season, when work, family and revision are all competing for the same evenings. Getting one chapter ahead early is the difference between a term you steer and a term that steers you.

Keeping the plan alive for two years

Tell the people you live with which slots are study slots, and defend them by keeping them small and predictable rather than heroic. Tell your manager when the examination windows fall, a term in advance — leave requested early is granted easily; leave requested in exam week looks like a crisis.

Some working weeks simply have no evenings in them — travel, a release, a family event. For those, shrink rather than skip: the commute listening and the Sunday close-of-week block are the two elements to protect, because they keep the thread alive until a normal week returns. A plan you can shrink is a plan you can keep.

And when a week collapses — one will — restart the pattern on the following Monday instead of trying to study double. Doubling turns one lost week into three tired ones. The programme is two years long precisely so that no single week decides it; what decides it is whether the pattern is still running in month eighteen.

Even, unspectacular consistency is the whole game. The plan above is deliberately boring, because boring is what survives.
