A distance learning centre — often called a study centre or learner support centre — is a local facility attached to a university. It may handle admission paperwork, distribute material, host contact sessions, and sometimes serve as an examination venue.
It does not award your degree. The university does. That single fact is the most useful thing to understand before you walk into one, because it tells you what to verify: not the centre’s signage, but the university behind it.

An agent is not automatically a problem — many are legitimate counsellors. The problem is only when fees are collected outside the university’s own channel.
Four checks before you pay
- Find the centre on the university’s own list, with its code.
- Confirm DEB entitlement for the programme, mode and session — the centre’s existence proves nothing about entitlement.
- Pay only to the university, against a university receipt. Never to an individual.
- Ask where the examination is held and whether any contact session is compulsory.
If you are studying fully online, you may never need a centre at all — confirm whether your programme uses remote proctoring.
