What it realistically asks of your week
The honest answer is that it varies with the programme and with how you study, but the shape is consistent: reading and assignments spread across the week, concentrated around submission and examination periods.
The periods that actually strain a job are predictable — assignment deadlines and examination weeks — and they are published in advance. People who plan leave around those two things generally cope; people who discover them a week out generally do not.
Ask for the academic calendar before you enrol, not after. Knowing when the pressure points fall is most of what makes this manageable.
Four things to check against your job
- Examination format and location. If examinations are at a physical centre, work out the travel and the leave now.
- Assignment windows. Fixed deadlines and flexible windows are very different propositions for someone with an unpredictable job.
- Whether sessions are recorded. Live-only sessions are difficult to sustain around meetings.
- Your employer's study policy. Many organisations have written sponsorship or study-leave provisions and simply do not advertise them.
Making the study count at work
This is the distance student's real advantage and most people leave it unused. You have a live organisation to apply the coursework to while you study, which a full-time student does not.
- Choose assignment topics that touch problems your team actually has.
- Use your own organisation's numbers where the coursework allows it.
- Tell your manager what you are studying — the work you produce becomes visible rather than invisible.
- Keep what you build. It becomes interview material a certificate cannot be.
Done this way, the MBA stops being two years of evenings and starts being evidence.
