The three modes, precisely
The labels get used loosely in advertising, but under India’s regulatory framework they are three distinct delivery modes, and the distinction has teeth.
ODL — Open and Distance Learning. The spine of the programme is self-learning material, printed or digital, studied on your own schedule. Contact is limited by design: counselling sessions at a study centre rather than a timetable of lectures. Examinations are generally written in person at designated centres.
Online. The entire programme lives on the internet: teaching through a learning management system with live or recorded lectures, submissions uploaded, and examinations frequently conducted online as well, under remote proctoring.
Hybrid, or blended. A declared mixture — a defined portion delivered online, the remainder through physical classes or in-person components. Where the term is used formally it is not a loose word for “some videos”; the proportions are specified.

Why the label carries weight
Approval to run a degree programme is granted mode by mode. A university cleared to teach in one mode has not thereby been cleared for another — the DEB record for your session must name the mode you are actually enrolling in, and the safest question to ask an admission counsellor is which of the three words will appear against your enrolment.
The mode also shapes your daily experience more than the university’s name does. It decides where you sit examinations, whether a study centre features in your life at all, and what a dead internet connection costs you in a given week. Choosing a mode is choosing a routine.
Two practical consequences follow. First, when you compare programmes, compare like with like — an ODL programme and an online programme from the same university are different products with different routines, not one product with two names. Second, keep the paperwork consistent: the mode named in your admission letter, on the programme page you saved, and in the approval record should all agree. Where they do not, that is a question to resolve before paying, not after.
Which mode suits which student
ODL suits the self-directed reader: someone comfortable working from material alone, perhaps with patchy connectivity, who lives within reach of a centre and can accept travelling for examinations.
Online suits the connected professional: reliable broadband, a preference for the structure of scheduled lectures, and a strong preference for examining from home rather than travelling.
Hybrid suits those who want some classroom contact without surrendering a job to get it — with one caution: check which city the physical component actually happens in before you fall for the format.
