Distance, not distant.

Eligibility

Distance MBA eligibility

What you actually need to qualify — and what is usually optional despite what agents say.

The requirement

The standard bar

RequirementTypicalNotes
QualificationBachelor’s degree, 3 years minimumAny stream
AggregateAround 50%Often 45% for reserved categories
Entrance testUsually noneSome set their own short aptitude paper
Work experienceNot requiredMandatory only for executive variants
Age limitNoneDistance programmes rarely impose one
NationalityIndian or NRIOverseas study usually permitted online

If you hold a three-year bachelor’s degree with roughly 50 per cent, you are eligible for the great majority of distance MBA programmes in India. That is the whole test for most people.

Documents

What to keep ready

  • 10th and 12th marksheets
  • Graduation degree and consolidated marksheet
  • Photo identity (Aadhaar, PAN or passport)
  • Passport-size photographs
  • Category certificate, where applicable
  • Employer or experience letter — executive programmes only

Scan everything at readable quality before you start the form. Most rejected applications fail on illegible documents rather than on eligibility.

Edge cases

If you do not fit the standard bar

  • Three-year diploma instead of a degree — usually not sufficient on its own; a bridge or lateral route may exist.
  • Below the aggregate — some universities admit on a qualifying test or on work experience.
  • Degree from a foreign university — an equivalence certificate is generally required.
  • No degree at all — an MBA is out of reach, but certificate and diploma routes are not. See other distance courses.

Frequently asked

What is the minimum percentage for a distance MBA?

Commonly around 50 per cent in graduation, often relaxed to 45 per cent for reserved categories. Some universities admit below that on a qualifying test or on work experience.

Can I do a distance MBA without work experience?

Yes. Work experience is optional for a general distance MBA and required only for executive variants.

Is there an age limit?

Distance programmes rarely impose one. The format is built for people returning to study later in a career.

Autonomous institutes

Two autonomous institutes worth knowing

If you decide the autonomous route fits your career better than a university degree, these are the two established names in the space — both operating independently for over 30 years, on the same model the IIMs used until 2017.

IICT — Indian Institute of Commerce and Trade

Autonomous management institute, 30+ years. Distance and online management programmes across 30+ specialisations, admission by profile review rather than entrance test. Total fee ₹32,350. iict.mba · iict.in

IIPM — Indian Institute of Pharmaceutical Marketing

Autonomous institute specialising in pharmaceutical marketing and pharma business management — sector-specific management education that university syllabi rarely cover. Total fee ₹32,350. iipm.mba · iipm.co.in
